Europa Nostra-Cyprus is an independent initiative that works parallel to the European Federation of Cultural Heritage Organizations, Europa Nostra.
In the 43rd Annual Meeting of Europa Nostra Scientific Council in Belgrade in September 2007, Agni Pedridou and Naciye Doratlı were examined and accepted as members of the Council. During a lunch with the Executive President of EN Denis de Kergorley, Secretary General of Europa Nostra Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic and the President of Europa Nostra Scientific Council Prof. Perbellini, possibility of establishment of EN Cyprus has been discussed. Since then initiation of the process has been postponed, due to probable political obstacles until 2016, when it was believed that the climate became suitable more than ever before.
Consequently, six Greek Cypriots, Dr. Agni Petridou, Glafkos Constantinides, Phoebe Katsouris, Assist. Prof. Dr. Nicolas Bakirtzis, Nayia Savvides Yiola Kourou; and six Turkish Cypriots, Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı, Prof.Dr. Şebnem Hoşkara, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ege U. Tümer, Assist. Prof. Dr. Müge Riza, İlkay Feridun, Birgül Beyatlı came together to launch an initiative, which would be a common ground for both communities to join their efforts for protection and revitalization of the cultural heritage of Cyprus as part of the EUROPA NOSTRA FAMILY.
With the support and encouragement of Prof. Gianni Perbellini (President of ENSC then), Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović (Secretary General of Europa Nostra) and Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou (European Commission in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Sport, then), an assembly has been organized in October 2015 at Chateau Status with the participation of these honorable people and fifty Turkish and Greek Cypriots and Europa Nostra Cyprus has been established as an initiative.
